Why You Might Not Want to Copy Paris Hilton and Cardi B's Engagement Ring

This post was originally published on this site

It might not seem like heiress-turned-nightclub DJ Paris Hilton and rapper Cardi B have a lot in common, but the two are surprisingly similar. Both ladies are New York City natives and former reality TV stars. They both make majorrr money moves (millions of dollars in net worth) and work in the music industry. But we’re not here to give you a Venn diagram of their lives—we’re here to talk about their twin pear-shaped diamond engagement rings that they both returned after calling it quits on their relationships in the past month. Yes, we’re talking about the curse of the $500,000+ pear-shaped, diamond monstrosity that has “coincidentally” ended two celebrity relationships.

Let’s investigate.

In October 2017, shortly after Cardi B’s breakout song “Bodak Yellow” topped charts around the world, Cardi’s now ex-husband Offset popped the question during a concert in Philadelphia. In a sweet video, Offset gets down on one knee on stage in front of a crowd and presents Cardi with an massive eight carat pear-shaped diamond ring. She took to Instagram to share the exciting news, writing in a now-deleted post, “Jesus Christ I’m so emotional. [Offset] I loveee you so much. Thank you for seeing the potential in me since you met me. For giving me advice, molding me and loving me. You’re such a amazing man to me, your family, friends, kids, and you are extremely talented. I can’t wait to spend FOREVAAAA with you. Lets make a lot shmoney and love together.” At the time, the couple had already been married in a secret private ceremony, but the two were planning on having a second, larger ceremony.

The massive ring came with an equally massive price tag. According to reports, the stunning sparkler was valued at $500,000. Here’s a close up look at Cardi’s ring (and her extravagant nails).

Three months later, in early January 2018, Paris Hilton and her then-boyfriend Chris Zylka were enjoying a lavish ski trip in Aspen. On one trip up a ski mountain, Zylka got down on one knee, in the snow, to propose to Hilton. “I was so excited and surprised! I immediately said yes!” she told People at the time. “The ring was so gorgeous and sparkling. I was shaking as I put it on. It is the most beautiful ring that I have ever seen!” (We’re guessing she hadn’t seen Cardi’s at that point.)

The impressive 20-carat ring was worth a whopping $2 million, according to a celebrity jeweler. Hilton did what any newly engaged girl with a million-dollar ring would do and shared shots of the bauble to social media, where fans were quick to point out the similarity between her new accessory and Cardi’s. One Twitter user wrote at the time, “Cardi B and Paris Hilton’s are twinning with the pear shaped rings!” To which Hilton replied, “Our future hubby’s obviously both have amazing & similar taste!😍💎 Congrats @iamcardib & @OffsetYRN! #LuckyGirls 👑👑 #RingGoals 💍”

Offset and Cardi didn’t mind the comparison, either. When TMZ asked about the similarity, Offset said, “Same thing… same type, same drip.”

“It’s pretty,” Cardi added.

Fast forward to late November, when news broke that Hilton and Zylka had called off their engagement. An insider told People, “The relationship moved very fast, and she realized it wasn’t right for her,” which meant she probably had to give back that $2 million diamond. Just two weeks later, Cardi announced that she and her husband were separating—and promptly shared videos of herself ring-free. Coincidence? We think not.

Now before you freak out and think,“But my engagement ring is pear shaped and my fiancé and I are never calling off our engagement! Stop making up conspiracy theories about engagement rings!”, let us remind you that we are referring to the rings that are 8-20 carats and have a minimum price tag of half a million dollars AND we’re talking celeb romances. If you’re like us (a.k.a. NOT an heiress or a record-breaking rapper), chances are your boyfriend isn’t coughing up $500,000+ for your engagement ring anyway, so live worry-free that your love is cursed.
