Remember that one time Meghan Markle’s father, Thomas Markle, decided not to come to his daughter’s royal wedding to Prince Harry, then changed his mind, then changed his mind again (even after she selected him to walk her down the aisle)!? Well, in case you forgot, a new documentary shows the groom weighing in on the matter, including his father, Prince Charles’, decision to give Meghan away on the big day.
According to People, Harry opened up in Prince, Son and Heir: Charles at 70, which is set to air on BBC One later Thursday. During an interview for the film, the soon-to-be-dad admitted that he himself actually requested his father to escort his bride in light of her unexpected family drama.
“I asked him to and I think he knew it was coming and he immediately said, ‘Yes, of course, I’ll do whatever Meghan needs and I’m here to support you,'” said Prince Harry, per People. “For him that’s a fantastic opportunity to step up and be that support, and you know he’s our father so of course he’s gonna be there for us.”
If you recall, Meghan chose to walk alone halfway down the aisle at St. George’s Chapel, then met Prince Charles at the Quire, who accompanied her onward.
Prince Harry also dished on the moment he proudly accepted his bride and uttered “Thanks, Pa” in Charles’ direction, People notes.
“You’ve gotta say thank you,” admitted the royal. “Just because he’s my father that doesn’t mean I can just sort of go, ‘Okay, that’s all, I’ll take it from here.’ Err, no, that is what I wanted to say but erm…and I was very grateful for him to be able to do that.”
Although she didn’t hear the exchange from her seat at the wedding, Camilla Parker Bowles, Charles’ wife, also spoke on the sweet father-son moment in the documentary, People reports.
“I think that was very touching, sitting where I was, you couldn’t hear what he said,” she added. “But afterwards watching it on the television, I… I think it was a very… it was a lovely gesture.”
On top of Meghan’s warm welcome into the royal family, she and her father-in-law have continued to bond. Turns out, the pair shares a love of art and are both no strangers to a little family drama, sources report. During Meghan’s official visit with Prince Harry three weeks ago, she also sported the diamond-infused tennis bracelet that Prince Charles gifted her on the big day.
