Finolhu

Preparing for the launch of Finolhu, the latest from The Small Maldives Island Co.

Having revolutionised the ‘typical Maldives resort’ concept with 2014’s game-changing launch of Amilla Fushi, The Small Maldives Island Co. looks set to confound expectations once again with the opening of sister resort Finolhu in mid-2016. To celebrate the soon-to-open property, the new Resort Manager, Rochelle Kilgariff, visited Sydney and invited media guests to a sumptuous lunch at Regatta Rose Bay on Friday 12 February.

Over lunch of sashimi cones and savoury cigars, Ms Kilgariff described what guests can expect at Finolhu. The new resort is set to bring a timeless sense of style to the pristine lagoons and rich waters of the Maldives’ Baa Atoll, taking the form of a retro-inspired island paradise for fun-loving jetsetters.

Located in the UNESCO World Biosphere that is the Baa Atoll (just 30 minutes by speedboat from sister resort, Amilla Fushi), Finolhu is an island experience for couples, fun-loving families and gathering of friends. There are seven villa types to choose from – over water or on the beach, one or two bedroom, with or without pool – all eclectically furnished with Marshall speakers and blue bottles of organic skin and body products from UK brand, Neal’s Yard Remedies.

Collaborating once again with Island Restaurateur, Luke Mangan, Finolhu will be home to laid-back yet elegant dining options: Salt Grill is all about contemporary Australian cuisine; the Fish & Crab Shack is a relaxed nod to seaside food stalls; Baa Bar and Dining offers the simplicity of bold flavours served under the stars and accompanied by an extensive wine library; and Kanusan showcases the innovative flavours of Asian cuisines.

Centred around a hub of pastel-coloured beach huts, Finolhu’s The Cove will be a stripped-back spa concept, offering a calm haven with eight chandelier-lit treatment ‘Divans’, complemented by a fitness centre, yoga pavilion and outdoor ‘jungle gym’. The island’s natural environment is the inspiration for fitness activities at The Cove, from capoeira and paddleboarding to ballet and kickboxing, while the facilities will also include a relaxation area overlooking the beach, steam/sauna, wellness areas, salon and retail pavilion.

Finolhu’s Marine Hub is home to a variety of water sports and the dive centre, as well as the Oceaneers Club for tots to teens. For a go-slow beach vibe, guests can while away the days at the Baa Baa Beach Club, lazing and grazing on finger food, beers or cocktails.

tina-pic

Tina Zündorff is TUIs representative on Kuredu for the past 5 years. After their holidays, TUI guests receive a questionnaire from the company which they send back with their feedback. Last year for the first time, TUI compared all the forms that were collected from all over the world. The out come was that a single tour guide stood out from the rest and we are proud to say that Tina is TUI’s best tour guide in the world.

Kuredu Air Best

When Tina was asked what her secret was, she replied;

“There is no secret, I think what is most important is to do everything with heart and soul. This feeling carries over to the guest. As the saying goes: W   hat goes around, comes around. “
She added “Remain true to oneself, always be authentic and never lose enthusiasm for the profession.”

We are very proud and lucky to have Tina on the resort. Always smiling and ready with a helping hand to anyone who needs it!

World Tourism Day on “Tourism and Water”: greater efforts on water preservation needed from the Maldives.

World Tourism Day on “Tourism and Water”: greater efforts on water preservation needed from the Maldives.

27th of September marks the United Nations´ calendar day highlighting tourism, a sector that is driving socioeconomic growth and development all over the world. On World Tourism Day 2013, dedicated to “Tourism and Water – Protecting Our Common Future” in line with the International Year of Water Cooperation, stakeholders called for greater global efforts in water preservation.

Opening the official celebrations of World Tourism Day (WTD) 2013, hosted this year by the Maldives, President Mohammed Waheed Hassan Manik said “Solutions to the Maldives´ water challenges are in the tourism sector. I hope that the industry will pay attention to the way the Maldives has been addressing the water challenge. The Maldives must become an example of what can be done.”

The call by the United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon on the responsibility of the tourism sector to safeguard and intelligently manage water was echoed by UNWTO Secretary-General Taleb Rifai: “As one of the world’s leading socio-economic activities, the tourism sector must take a leadership role and ensure companies and destinations invest in adequate water management throughout the value chain.”

The Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture of the Maldives, Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Gafoo, stressed how “tourism has become a powerful force for environmental preservation and protection. For our country, the tourism sector constitutes a priority because it is an important asset for the creation of wealth and employment.”

“This is a crucial issue for PATA and its members. The growth of the tourism sector brings inevitable challenges of balancing sustainability. We are delighted to join the celebrations of World Tourism Day and support this important and timely initiative here in the Maldives” said Martin Craigs, CEO of the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA).

Tourism to lead in water preservation

As the highlight of WTD 2013, a high-level Think Tank on Tourism and Water gathered leading experts on water preservation, public and private sector tourism stakeholders and media experts to discuss key issues contributing to a more sustainable water future.

The following are the key insights of the Think Tank conclusions:

The Maldives is a paradigm of well-managed and sustainable water use in developing island States, where the availability of fresh water and the level of water consumption for tourism have become a particular concern.
With over one billion people traveling the world every year, the tourism sector can play an educational role as a water-conscious sector.
Though tourism only uses 1% of global water consumption, challenges remain for water use at destinations, since the sector often competes with other sectors for water.
There is significant room for increasing efficiency and reducing cost of water consumption in hotels (water accounts for 10% of utility bills in many hotels, most of which pay for the water they consume twice, first in buying fresh water and by disposing of it as wastewater).
Investing in green technology is economically beneficial, with profits from water sanitation and wastewater treatment having a return on investment (ROI) of one to three years.
Given tourism´s size and reach, the sector is well-positioned to make a real contribution to preserving the world´s precious water resources.
World Tourism Day (WTD) is held annually on 27 September.

Its purpose is to foster awareness among the international community of the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic value. The event seeks to address global challenges outlined in the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and to highlight the contribution the tourism sector can make in reaching these goals.
