Grand Park Kodhipparu Maldives has introduced reef-safe sunscreen.
The resort is encouraging divers and snorkelers to use the reef-safe sunscreen, as it protects marine life from the harmful effects of two harmful chemicals, Oxybenzone and Octinoxate. This initiative will help safeguard the precious coral life.
“Many regular sunscreens contains these two chemicals, which have been shown in laboratory studies to be highly toxic to corals and other animals, particularly the young stages that need to replenish marine populations,” Peter Pringle, the resort’s resident marine biologist, explained.
Due to their potential toxicity to reefs, several states, including Hawaii and Palau, have recently banned the sale of sunscreens containing Oxybenzone and Octinoxate.
Every year, between 6,000 and 14,000 tons of sunscreen washes off into the sea. Preventing high levels of associated toxic compounds from entering the water could contribute to healthier reefs in the face of widespread coral die-offs that are linked to warmer ocean temperatures and global climate change.
