Nika Island Resort & Spa is a milestone in the hospitality industry of the country. The resort has been pioneering the concept of tourism for more than 30 years, instilling and spreading Italian culture in Ari Atoll.

A.A. Kudafolhudhu turned into a resort back in 1983: since its inception, the philosophy and values that shaped this unique boutique-hotel are the same: privacy, natural sophistication and local heritage.

All the villas have been built according to the traditional Maldivian architectural style: being one of the first hotels built in the country, everything on the island has been built using coral blocks, coconut wood and palm leaves.

A collection of antiques and unique Maldivian pieces of art decorate the interiors of all the villas.

“We believe in aesthetics and culture” says Edo.“We consider Nika an ideal place where Italian traditions and culture meet the local heritage: we are the Maldives that used to be”. The aficionadosof this unique boutique hotel knows how much we have been investing into preserving and maintaining a strong Maldivian identity here, at Nika”

Edoardo Caccin – General Manager of the Nika Island Resort & Spa Maldives / Эдоардо Качин – Главный Управляющий Nika Island Resort & Spa

Nika promoted a special night called “Nostalgia: the Maldives that used to be”: an event that gathered not only the guests spending their stay at this unique boutique hotel, but also the representatives of the neighbouring local islands (Mathiveri and Bodufolhudhoo) and the GMs of the main Resorts and Guest-Houses in Ari Atoll.

Edoardo Caccin opened the show declaring: “Nika believes in culture. We are convinced that it is a powerful driver for development, with community-wide social, economic impacts, not only for the resort but also for the entire community living in our beautiful Atoll”.

Edoardo stressed that “culture has a transformative power on existing development approaches, helping to broaden the terms of the current development of our operations and to make development much more relevant to the needs of our guests and of the community; Cultural heritage, cultural and creative industries, can serve as strategic tools for creating a complete experience for our guests and for all the people visiting and residing in our beautiful Island”.

The event totally focused on the (almost) lost tradition of Stone Carving.

Mohamed Imran is a talented Maldivian artist residing in Male who masters the techniques of stone-carving. During the event, he explained to the crowd the importance of this art for the country, and what he’s currently doing to revamp local heritage.
An exhibition with a selection of hand-made artifacts carved on a variety of materials allowed Nika’s guests to discover a centuries-old tradition that is fading away and slowly disappearing.

Both Edoardo Caccin and Imran agreed that “revamping the country’s heritage is not a commercial strategy, it is a moral obligation”.

The artist Mohamed Imran /

The day after the show, Nika promoted a tailor-made workshop, involving all the children and encouraging them to carve small fragments of stone.

Nika Island is a perfect example of a boutique hotel that breaks the dynamics of big international brands that are reshaping the Maldivian hospitality industry. Nika is a heady mix of Italian lifestyle and Maldivian traditions: a unique platform where heritage and natural beauty meet together. “A thing of beauty” that should be experienced at least once in a lifetime.

3-person submarine, Super Falcon 3S is launched at Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru

Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru is the first resort in the world to launch DeepFlight’s first 3-person submarine, Super Falcon 3S.

Four Seasons underwater 1

In a world exclusive, DeepFlight Adventures take up to two guests on a once-in-a-lifetime sub-aquatic “dive” exploration of the Maldives’ only UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Landaa Giraavaru’s Baa Atoll home.

With a professional pilot at the controls, passengers can skim over coral formations; fly through shoals of brightly colored fish; encounter creatures such as turtles, sharks, dolphins, and rays; and explore the Maldivian waters down to a depth of 120 feet (37 meters) – all without getting wet.

Brought to the Maldives in collaboration with leading watersports operator Ocean Group, the Super Falcon 3S represents the pinnacle of personal submarine technology: an environmentally friendly, battery-operated submersible that offers unparalleled underwater “flying” from the safety, comfort, and style of a personal pressurized and air-conditioned cockpit, with individual viewing domes.

Once submerged, the domes virtually disappear, providing a 360-degree view of the underwater world. Additionally, its flight-inspired design allows the Super Falcon 3S to glide effortlessly over reefs and cruise alongside marine mammals such as dolphins.

The Super Falcon 3S has also been designed with the environment in mind: its electric and acoustic emissions have been minimized so as not to disturb marine life, and it never lands on the seabed or reefs. The pilot narrates each dive with a real-time commentary, educating and inspiring guests about the wonders of the underwater ecosystem.

Safety is DeepFlight’s number one priority. Certified by Lloyds Register, a leading marine classification society, the Super Falcon 3S features fixed positive buoyancy and a patented thrust and lift system that enables it to not only “fly” underwater, but to automatically float back to the surface in the unlikely event of power loss. A surface team tracks and monitors the submarine during each dive, staying in communication with the pilot via an underwater communications system.

Commenting on the launch, Four Seasons Regional Vice President Armando Kraenzlin said, “At Four SeasonsLandaa Giraavaru, we have long been aligned with DeepFlight’s mission to bring awareness to the oceans. These submarine excursions redefine marine exploration and bridge the gap between the world we see above the waves and the one that exists below. We couldn’t be prouder to be the first resort in the world to launch the DeepFlight Super Falcon 3S.”

A DeepFlight Adventures’ submarine excursion will take about 1 hour from boarding to flying underwater and disembarkation.

Children must be aged 7 and above and over 1.2-metres tall; maximum weight per person is 120 kg (265 lbs); maximum height is 1.9 metres (6.4 ft.).

How much does a DeepFlight Adventures’ excursion cost at Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru?
US$1500.00 (+ 12% GST) per flight for up to a maximum of two passengers.
