25 Opal Engagement Rings For the Modern Bride-to-be

no thumb

Opal engagement rings are majorly trending with millennial brides-to-be. Opals are one-of-a-kind gemstones, vary in color, and can make a beautiful engagement ring within a budget a reality. We’re smack in the middle of an opal resurgence, and more jewelry designers are now offering opal engagement rings in every shape, color, and size.

If you’re looking for deep meaning with your engagement ring stone, look no further. Opals have incredible significance attached to them, dating back to the middle ages—it was believed opals had the power to make their wearer invisible. Known as “The Queen of Gems” Opals have traditionally belonged to those celebrating an October birthday. In recent years, opals have gained popularity among millennials— probably due to their unique nature, since no opal stone is like the other.

Opal engagement rings also carry a vintage, Art Deco vibe due to the stone’s popularity in the late 19th century. Opals rose back into fashion when Queen Victoria’s became fascinated with them—she had her very own personal collection of opals, and often gave them away as gifts. Other famous opal lovers in history include Cleopatra and Empress Josephine. So, yeah, opal lovers you’re in good company.

A Look Back on Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip's Royal Wedding Day

no thumb

Happy anniversary, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip! To celebrate their 71 years of marriage, we’re looking back on the original royal wedding of the century, Queen Elizabeth’s November 20, 1947, wedding to Prince Phillip!

How They Met

As is common in European royal families, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip of Greece are distant cousins. Both are great-great-grandchildren of the OG bride, Queen Victoria. They first met when she was 13 and he was 18, when the then-princess visited the Royal Navy College with her family (he was a cadet in training), and evidently it was love at first site.

Marion Crawford, the queen’s nanny at the time, noted in her book that Elizabeth “never took her eyes off him.” Elizabeth’s cousin Margaret Rhodes told Vanity Fair, “She never looked at anyone else.”

Phillip and the princess continued to correspond while he was at sea during World War II. Phillip regularly visited the royal family while on leave from the navy, spending time with Elizabeth at Windsor Castle and Balmoral, the family’s Scottish estate (one of the queen’s favorite places to this day).

The Proposal

After the war, Phillip relocated to London and frequently visited the young princess at Buckingham Palace.

Phillip proposed to Elizabeth after a monthlong vacation at Balmoral with her family. Her father insisted that the engagement be kept under wraps until the princess turned 21. Phillip then gave up his title as H.R.H. Prince Phillip of Greece.

An engagement ring was crafted by Philip Antrobus, a London jeweler, out of diamonds from Philip’s mother’s tiara.

The Dress

Elizabeth chose a duchesse-satin long-sleeved wedding dress with floral embroidery and crystal and pearl appliqués (10,000 pearls, to be exact) designed by Norman Hartnell, who cited as his inspiration Botticelli’s painting “Primavera.” The 13-foot silk train made for quite the entrance and no doubt set royal wedding trends for the future. (Hello, Fergie’s and Princess Diana’s trains!)

Her veil was of course topped off with a diamond tiara, made from a necklace given to Queen Victoria as a wedding present.

The Details

Much like Prince William and Duchess Kate after them, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip’s nuptials took place at Westminster Abbey. But the wedding was the first major event to grace London since the end of the war. The king insisted on a quiet wedding, so as not to offend the British people, and the princess even saved up ration cards to purchase a wedding gown.

Only 150 guests attended the wedding celebration, a luncheon at Buckingham Palace which featured a towering tiered wedding cake.

Flowers were present in the form of pink and white carnations on the tables and small bouquets of myrtle and Balmoral heather at each seat. The only over-the-top portion of the celebration: The bride and groom cut their four-tier, 500-pound wedding cake with Phillip’s sword.

The Honeymoon

In typical Queen Elizabeth fashion—she loves the outdoors—the couple honeymooned at Broadlands, his family’s estate in Hampshire, and then spent two weeks in an early-18th-century stone lodge in the middle of the woods of the Balmoral estate. The couple spent much of the honeymoon deerstalking.

Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake's 2012 Wedding Was a Total Dream

no thumb

This will always be one of our favorite celebrity weddings! To us, it seems like only yesterday that Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake said “I do” in the Italian countryside surrounded by family and friends—and with Jessica in a seriously trendsetting wedding dress. But today marks six years since their 2012 nuptials. And, if their red carpet PDA is any indication, the couple—now parents to three-year-old Silas—is still very much in the honeymoon phase. In honor of Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake’s wedding anniversary today, we’re reminiscing on their 2012 ceremony.

Around 100 guests were invited to spend the week with Biel and Timberlake in Puglia, Italy to celebrate their wedding on October 19, 2012, with the star-heavy crowd gathering at the Borgo Egnazia resort in Puglia for the private over-the-top event. The white-stoned, castle-like Borgo Egnazia offered the couple and their celebrity guests the utmost privacy. The 63-room, 28-villa luxury hotel feels like a mini-village and was tight on security, so guests didn’t have to be nervous about the paparazzi.

Now, let’s talk about that dress! On the big day, Jessica wowed everyone by foregoing with tradition and opting out of wearing white on her wedding day (we love a non-conformist bride!). The future Mrs. Timberlake walked down the aisle in a jaw-dropping, floating-on-air custom, petal pink Giambattista Valli Haute Couture gown. The veil, also created by Giambattista Valli, was encrusted with Biel’s heirloom pearls, and Valli outfitted the entire wedding party (including the bride and groom’s moms) in his gorgeous creations.

Meanwhile, the groom wore a custom Tom Ford tux, that he helped design. Timberlake’s groomsmen, the bride and groom’s fathers, and the page boy, also wore Tom Ford.

As Biel walked down the aisle in her stunning pink dress she was serenaded by none other than—you guessed it—her ex-boy-bander husband! “It was an original piece I wrote specifically for the evening and for her,” Timberlake told People at the time.

The star-studded guest list at the week-long celebration included Jimmy Fallon, Andy Samberg, Timbaland, and Beverley Mitchell just to name a few. “It was a really special evening,” Justin shared with People.

Marriage has suited the couple well, as they often gush over each other on Instagram, are the life of the party at other weddings they attend, and aren’t shy about declaring their love. “I’m so proud of all you’ve accomplished and all that is ahead for you,” Biel wrote to her husband on Instagram earlier this year. “Plus you’re a super hot dad. A ninja dad. A kiddie teeth brushing, Jedi sleep mind tricking, intimidating dad voice disciplining SUPER HOT DAD. I love you, you hot dad.. I’m here, right by your side, OG fan girl #1.”

The couple welcomed their first child, Silas, in 2015 and since then, their family halloween costumes have been on point. How adorable were their Toy Story themed get-ups from last year? But of course, they still always make time for date nights.

Kate Middleton Is in Alexander McQueen at Princess Eugenie's Wedding

GettyImages-1051949144.jpg

Looks like it’s “wear your wedding dress designer” day for both Duchesses at Princess Eugenie’s wedding. Kate Middleton and Prince William had the crowds going wild as they arrived to his cousin’s wedding this morning. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge arrived with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, and Kate Middleton’s fuschia pink Alexander McQueen has our jaws dropping.

Like Meghan Markle, who chose a look by her wedding dress designer Givenchy for the occasion, Kate Middleton is in a bright pink Alexander McQueen set for Princess Eugenie’s wedding. The Duchess of Cambridge stole the spotlight in the gorgeous hue, and we’re loving her return from maternity leave style. Not to mention the slight PDA we saw from the Cambridges! As they sat at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle waiting for the wedding, William and Kate held hands—a total departure for this royal couple. Maybe Meghan and Harry’s PDA started a trend?

Kate Middleton is famously head-over-heels for Alexander McQueen. Her iconic royal wedding dress was designed by McQueen’s Sarah Burton, and she’s chosen to wear looks from the brand for many of the royal family’s most important affairs—including Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s royal wedding. The Duchess has famously recycled some of her Alexander McQueen looks to family and friend’s weddings.

This is a departure for Kate, who has been known to recycle her wedding looks to keep eyes off of her and on the bride. At Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s wedding, she wore a pale yellow (not white!) coat dress by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen that she’s previously worn on two occasions: Princess Charlotte’s christening and the queen’s birthday. While that may sound like a lot, there’s another dress—a cream coat by Day Birger et Mikkelsen, according to Harper’s Bazaar Australia—that she’s worn to three weddings, starting before she became a royal.

Meghan Markle Wears Givenchy To Princess Eugenie's Wedding

GettyImages-1051949146.jpg

If you thought Meghan Markle’s wedding dress was good, wait until you see her wedding guest dress—by the same designer! The Duchess of Sussex just arrived at Princess Eugenie’s wedding in a demure navy blue Givenchy dress, topped with a navy coat and fascinator.

Meghan Markle went for classy and understated Givenchy look, of course, for Princess Eugenie’s wedding–no need to upstage the bride, right?. The Duchess of Sussex, aka the most poured over royal bride in recent history, proved once again to be a super stylish wedding guest at Princess Eugenie’s wedding this morning. Markle and Prince Harry caused quite a stir as they arrived at his cousin’s wedding to Jack Brooksbank—the crowd went wild as they ushered in to St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are back at the exact same venue where they said their “I dos” earlier this year, and they are just as stylish as that beautiful day in May. While Prince Harry chose traditional tails—as is custom for day weddings in Britain—his wife kept it understated in a navy blue frock from Givenchy, the same designer who created her stunning wedding dress.

WPA Pool

Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank’s dress code called for women to wear a day dress and hat, and Markle has officially mastered this wardrobe requirement. Markle’s had plenty of practice in royal weddings after all. Just a month after her own nuptials, for example, while attending the wedding of Princess Diana’s niece, the 37-year-old royal donned a long-sleeve, blue-and-white Oscar de la Renta shirtdress with a matching white headpiece. The Duchess of Sussex also outfitted herself in a navy Club Monaco midi dress with a pleated, multicolored skirt during Charlie van Straubenzee’s wedding on August 4 (a.k.a. her birthday!).

While her wedding guest looks are also making a statement, Markle’s Givenchy wedding dress, designed by Claire Waight Keller, has clearly had an effect on the bridal industry—as we saw several dresses on the most recent runways echoing the Duchess’s style. Will Princess Eugenie’s wedding dress cause the same frenzy? We’re still waiting to see what the Princess has chosen to wear down the aisle. But we’re expecting lots of lace, and a traditional look given the venue. Stay tuned to see what Princess Eugenie’s wedding dress revealed.

Tim McGraw and Faith Hill's Wedding: Marking 22 Years of Marriage for the Country Stars

GettyImages-814734066.jpg

It’s safe to say that Tim McGraw and Faith Hill are always giving us major #marriagegoals. Just take a look at the lyrics to their 2017 hit, “The Rest of Our Life”:

“Sitting with you in a dark room, warmed by a fireplace. You know there’s just something about you. You brighten my day. I got something to run past you, I just hope I say it right. So I take your hand and ask you, Have you made plans for the rest of your life?”

Today marks the 22nd anniversary of the couple’s marriage. So naturally, it’s time to go down memory lane and take a look back at Tim McGraw and Faith Hill’s sweet October 6, 1996 wedding. And of course ‘Happy anniversary!’ goes without saying to this adorable couple.

Getty Images

The Proposal

The couple fell for each other on tour in early 1996, and by October they were married. On their 19th wedding anniversary, McGraw told his audience in Colorado the adorable story of how he got Hill to marry him. “We were in the dressing room, here, June 26, 1996, and it was raining and stuff and we’d been on tour for a while together, and I joked around with her about getting married. And so I said… I looked at her, grabbed her by the hand, and dropped forward [on my knees] onstage. She had already done her show. And I said, ‘I’m really serious. I want you to marry me.'” The songstress laughed in response. “She said, ‘We’re at a country music festival in a trailer house, and you’re asking me to marry you? And I said, ‘Yeah.’ So I went onstage.”

During his performance, McGraw’s future wife gave him an answer to his question. “I had in my dressing room… this foldout case that had a mirror in it that was my dressing armoire,” McGraw said. “I still have it to this day. When I came back offstage, [I saw] a Sharpie with lipstick kisses all over it, saying, ‘Yes! I’m gonna be your wife.’ It had, ‘I love you’ with big lipstick kisses. And this is the place right here.”

Getty Images

The Wedding

Hill and McGraw might have been one of the first celebrity couples to pull off a surprise wedding. The duo invited friends for what guests thought would be a softball game and concert in the groom’s hometown of Rayville, Louisana, and surprised everyone as they stood under an oak tree with a minister, ready to say “I do.”

Wearing a simple slinky white wedding dress, the bride—who was three months pregnant at the time—went barefoot and sported some seriously ’90s gloves and a simple string of pearls. The groom wore jeans topped with a black coat.

We’ll continue to awww at Hill and McGraw’s sweet relationship, not to mention their adorable Instagram moments. From stage reunions to family vacations, these two sure know how to make marriage look easy. And there’s no shortage of Instagram-worthy moments between these two, from smooching selfies to snowball fights.

What Trends to Expect at Bridal Fashion Week

Greenberg_BFW_Naeem_041218-291.jpg

Bridal Fashion Week kicks off today! And if you’re hanging on to every single wedding dress moment like we are—and following along as we take you behind the scenes at all of the designer shows!—you’ll want to know exactly what to expect. Twice a year bridal designers showcase their latest collections and brides-to-be get a look at all the upcoming trends in wedding dresses. While we don’t know exactly what’s coming—though we did get an exclusive preview of what those dresses will look like—we tapped Houghton designer Katherine Polk to give us her take on the fall 2019 wedding dress collections. Here, the fashion and bridal designer breaks down what trends we’ll see all over the bridal runways.

Romantic and feminine gowns

“While this sounds pretty straightforward for bridal season, I think designers are really making a conscious effort to design light, airy, and feminine gowns that are both beautiful and whimsical, mainly made of chiffon. Designers are stepping away from heavily beaded and corseted/structured looks. This season will call for romantic silhouettes, making any bride look like she’s straight out of a romance novel.”

Shades and pops of color

“I foresee designers playing with prints and palettes of pale, pastel colors. Whether it be a sliver of fun print under a tulle or lace overlay or full skirts in diffused chiffon prints, this trend is sure to stay. It is subtle, yet fun!”

Bridal Jackets and Capes

“Jackets and capes are going to be a major trend and on every designer’s runway this year! We’ll see everything from motorcycle and denim jackets to chiffon capes.”

Diamond Hair Accessories

“I see diamond hair accessories making a big splash on the runway this year—think pins and hair clips embellished with delicate pave diamonds, holding back romantic curls, waves, or veils. Diamonds are the ultimate symbol of lifelong romance—they look amazing with any hairstyle and represent true love—everything a bride is looking for! With the overall theme focused on looking dreamy and effortless, diamonds will be a key component for this NY Bridal Fashion Week.”

Barack and Michelle Obama's Wedding Photos: A Look Back at Their Wedding Day

no thumb

Happy anniversary, Barack and Michelle Obama! As the former POTUS and FLOTUS celebrate their wedding anniversary, we’re of course taking the opportunity to reminisce about the Obamas’ endearing love story. These two are always giving us #MarriageGoals—whether it’s gushing over each other on Twitter or sharing sweet romantic moments in the White House (fist bumps, flirting, and dancing galore!). And while we love ogling the former first lady’s every fashion choice, now it’s time to look back on Barack and Michelle Obama’s gorgeous Chicago wedding day in October of 1992.

How They Met:

Barack and Michelle met in 1989, while the politician was a summer associate at a Chicago law firm. Michelle, then Michelle Robinson, was his advisor. At first, Michelle refused to accept the offer of a date from Barack, but fate took over. Their first-date itinerary? A picnic, long walk, tour of the Art Institute, Baskin-Robbins ice cream, and a movie—Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing.

“We clicked right away…by the end of the date, it was over…I was sold,” Michelle has said about their first date.

The Proposal:

The couple dated for two years before Barack proposed at Gordon’s restaurant in Chicago, where they were celebrating finishing the bar exam. “And he got me into one of these discussions again, where, you know, he sort of just led me down there and got fired up and it’s like you’ve got blah blah blah blah, and then dessert comes out, the tray comes out, and there’s a ring!” Michelle told The New Yorker.

Getty Images

The Wedding:

On October 3, 1992, Michelle and Barack said “I do” at Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago. The bride’s brother walked her down the aisle, while the groom’s brother served as best man. After the vows, a reception was held at the South Shore Cultural Center. Of course, self-professed Stevie Wonder superfan Michelle chose the singer’s “You and I” for their first dance as husband and wife. After the wedding, the couple took off for a California-coast honeymoon. Luckily, the iconic couple have shared a few of their wedding photos to social media over the years. See a shot from Michelle here, and one from Barack here. Thanks, Obama!

The Dress:

Way before she wowed us with her spot-on fashion sense (Jason Wu, Narciso Rodriguez, Christian Siriano!), the former first lady was a picture-perfect ’90s bride. Wearing one of our favorite resurrected ’90s trends, Michelle was lovely in an off-the-shoulder long-sleeved gown, pouffy veil, and statement drop-pearl earrings. She has since posted a pic of the dress to Instagram (see it here!), so we can fawn over the frock for years to come.

30 Royal Wedding Dresses in History You Have to See Before the Royal Wedding

Wedding in the Maldives islands, Its celebration of happiness in the middle of ocean with World class Accomodation and Food on your Holiday package, Photo by Asad

If you didn’t get enough of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle royal wedding mania earlier this year, you’re in luck! In honor of Princess Eugenie’s upcoming royal wedding, we’re looking back at the greatest royal wedding dresses in history. From Queen Victoria’s trend-setting white dress to Princess Diana’s long train, Queen Letizia of Spain, the lace dress that launched a thousand others on Kate Middleton, and Meghan Markle’s not one, but two iconic wedding dresses, these royal women sure know how to rock a dress down the aisle.

We drowned in all things royal wedding earlier this year, and we didn’t get enough. The second royal wedding of 2018 is fast approaching and we love nothing more than an excuse to browse royal wedding dresses through the years. Meghan Markle’s classic Claire Waight Keller dress is already one for the history books, but did you know it bears a striking resemblance to Princess Margaret’s simple silk gown? Did you know that Queen Victoria popularized the white wedding dress? Before her, women just wore their best dress down the aisle. From Princess Diana’s absolutely unforgettable big princess moment, to Grace Kelly’s all over lace Hollywood creation? (Visions of Kate Middleton anyone?)

While the designer for Princess Eugenie’s wedding dress hasn’t been confirmed, we can definitely expect her to take some inspiration from the royal brides who came before her.
