The Most Cringeworthy Brides of 2018

no thumb

There are plenty of ways to make your wedding memorable in 2018, but one way you (hopefully) shouldn’t? By going viral as a bridezilla bad person.

Don’t get us wrong, we love a bride who knows what she wants and goes after it—but don’t let your groom, wedding guests, or bridal party become collateral damage in doing so. But thanks to the Internet, these frightful brides will go down in infamy for demanding a little too much from their family and friends.

See our roundup to relive all the times the Internet cringed over awkward and absurd wedding demands. (And then be thankful that all your friend asked you to do was abstain from social media during the ceremony.)

The Bride Who Demanded Guests Pay a $75 Entrance Fee and Not Speak to Her

This bride-to-be went viral in September when an email (riddled with spelling mistakes) from her “wedding coordinator” was posted to Reddit. The email contained a ludicrous list of “rules and regulations” for guests, including requests for gifts worth at least $75 and demands that women can’t wear a “full face of makeup” or hairstyles other than a “basic bob or ponytail.” Furthermore, guests were instructed not to speak to the bride “at all.” We can’t imagine anyone would want to after this anyways…

The Bride-to-Be Who Asked the Internet to Drag Her Fiancé’s Ring Choice

The Internet came for this woman who asked Facebook to “roast” her boyfriend’s engagement ring choice—BEFORE he had even proposed with it. Turns out, the woman had found the ring in a nightstand and shared a photo of it to a ring-shaming social media group before it was even rightfully hers. It wasn’t long until the content was shared to Reddit where people criticized the bride for being ungrateful and for publicly embarrassing her significant other.

The Bride Who Fired Her Bridesmaid in a Truly Brutal Email

In July, Courtney Duffy shared a letter she received from her friend “Alex,” who asked Duffy to “relinquish” her bridesmaid duties, after Duffy had already booked her tickets to her friend’s wedding. While “Alex’s” email was apologetic and still invited Duffy to attend the wedding as a regular guest, she also awkwardly asked Duffy to return her bridesmaid jumpsuit. And worse yet, the whole thing was done via email—if you’re going to sever a friendship at least have the courtesy to pick up the phone. The silver lining? Jet Blue offered Duffy a free girl’s trip because of the whole viral debacle.

The Bride Who Called Off Her Wedding When Guests Wouldn’t Fund It

Shed a tear for “Susan” who took to Facebook to eviscerate her friends and family after they didn’t pony up $1,500 each (and in some cases, up to $5,000) for her “exclusive wedding.” The bride, in several expletive-laden paragraphs, explained how her life was ruined after guests wouldn’t crowd-fund her $60,000 dream “Kardashian” affair. Susan went on to call-out then fiancé for suggesting they elope to Las Vegas instead of dealing with the stress (“Am I supposed to get married in the heart of shady gamblers, alcoholics and the get rich fast fallacy?”) as well as her maid of honor for suggesting they plan a wedding within the couple’s own budget. (The horror!)

The Bride Who Read Her Cheating Fiancé’s Texts at the Altar

OK, this bride isn’t “cringeworthy” as much as “high-five worthy.” The Internet couldn’t help but cheer when hearing how this Australian bride handled learning about her groom’s infidelity the night before her wedding. Instead of calling the whole thing off, the anonymous bride chose to read her fiancé’s texts with another woman at the altar, in place of her vows—leaving her groom slack-jawed. She and her friends and family then topped off the day by enjoying the reception. Slow. Clap.

Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas Step Out for First Time as a Married Couple

If you thought Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra would emerge after their extravagant three-day wedding sporting hangovers and baseball hats, think again. The couple, of course, made their first appearance as a married pair looking just as glamorous and put together as they looked in the few wedding shots that have been shared.

Chopra and Jonas were seen on Monday leaving Jodphur, the town in Rajasthan where they were wed in the Taj Umaid Bhawan Palace—en route to Delhi (for another wedding reception)— dressed to the nines. Chopra sported a teal green and golden embroidered Sabyasachi sari with matching sleeveless blouse and accessorized with her fresh wedding mehendi, red and white bangles, and Bonnie Clyde cat eye sunglasses. She wore her hair straight, and, as traditional to new Indian brides, applied Sindoor to her hair part. Jonas, meanwhile, wore a Ermenegildo Zegna Couture khaki jacket and trousers, according to Vogue and accessorized with his new gold wedding band. Clips of the couple, posted by fan accounts on social media, show Jonas holding his new wife protectively as they walk through the crowd—at one point he also gazes upon Chopra and says “I love you.” (Are you melting yet?)

AFP/Getty Images

We’re more surprised the couple has the energy to get dolled up yet again, considering just how amazing the two looked over the weekend while celebrating their nuptials—which were said to cost more than $500,000 and involved everything from a cricket match, to a song-and-dance competition Sangeet, a fireworks show, and lavish welcome gifts for the guests.

While neither have shared photos from their Christian or Hindu ceremony, both have shared several shots from their mehendi, including one in which Chopra, wearing a colorful Khosla Jani numbers, laughs as Nick smiles next to her. “One of the most special things that our relationship has given us is a merging of families who love and respect each other’s faiths and cultures. And so planning our wedding with an amalgamation of both was so so amazing. An important part for the girl in an Indian wedding is the Mehndi,” Jonas captioned the images shared to Instagram. “Once again we made it our own and it was an afternoon that kicked off the celebrations the way we both dreamed.”

Priyanka Chopra's Hindu Ceremony Wedding Dress: What to Expect

no thumb

Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas have already confirmed that during their wedding this weekend the groom-to-be will be dressed as royalty, donning a traditional turban and sword as he makes an entrance on a horse. So what does that mean for Chopra—who coincidentally has played brides and even royalty in plenty of Bollywood films and is getting married in a literal palace in Jodphur? It means forget Ralph Lauren, you’ll need to call in the Indian big-wigs for this one.

While the designer for Chopra’s Christian ceremony gown has been all but confirmed as her former Met Gala fairy godmother, her outfit for her Hindu nuptials to Jonas have remained shrouded in secrecy. So just in time for Jonas and Chopra’s big day—one which the actress told Vogue will be so lavish (see their welcome gifts as proof) guests will require vacations after—we’ve gathered as much info as we could on what the bride will don for the many Indian functions during her wedding.

While Indian brides have often taken to wearing yellow for their haldi ceremonies, to match the turmeric rubbed on their skin, we doubt Chopra will be so predictable. (Not to mention, the actress already donned yellow for her roka in Mumbai in August.) Instead, expect to see her surprise guests in an unconventional pale hue, letting the color of the haldi stand out. And thanks to Bollywood star Anushka Sharma, florals have been having a big moment in bridal wear, so Chopra might incorporate a nice print into this look. Anita Dongre is our front-runner for the designer for this ceremony; Chopra recently wore a long-sleeved peach Dongre ensemble for her Thanksgiving celebration in Mumbai.

Mehendi and Sangeet

If Chopra were any other Indian bride, she’d don a bright shade like hot pink or a flashy turquoise for this function. But Chopra is anything but typical. We expect, much like her friend and fellow Bollywood actress, Sonam Kapoor, Chopra will wear white to her Sangeet as a little nod to her Christian ceremony gown. But just because it’s white, don’t expect anything casual from this look.

Based on Chopra’s bachelorette party outfit, a Georges Chakra feathered mini dress with matching cape, and her silvery-white Marchesa bridal shower gown with feathered detailing, we wouldn’t be surprised if her Sangeet look featured plenty of volume and drama in the form of feathers, ruffles or tulle. Despite the sure-to-be over-the-top moment, Chopra has previously said she wants her wedding clothes to be “comfortable and cute” so, expect her Sangeet outfit to be lightweight and flowy so that she can stay on the dance floor all night.

As for the designer behind her Sangeet look, we’re speculating Khosla Jani. The brand is the perfect blend of Indo-Western trends that Chopra and Jonas want their wedding to reflect, but Khosla Jani’s bombastic and sexy designs also complement Chopra’s style to a T. Even more telling? Khosla Jani was the designer behind the playful look Chopra wore while traveling to Jodphur from Mumbai on Thursday.

Hindu wedding ceremony

If Chopra’s pre-wedding event outfits will turn trends on their head and bring her over-the-top style into the mix, expect her main Hindu ceremony look to return to her traditional roots. While the actress has often opted for making statements on red carpets, she has expressed a desire for her wedding to observe some tradition in regards to the Hindu celebration—which means Chopra is undoubtedly going to don red (and not the pastel hues which are dominating the Indian runways) for her seven Pheras.

All signs also point to Manish Malhotra as the designer behind her wedding day outfit. The actress has often worn his creations (favoring him over the other go-to wedding designer of the stars, Sabyasachi—most recently seen on bride Deepika Padukone). While attending the engagement of friend Isha Ambani earlier this year, Chopra wore a Manish Malhotra sari (Jonas wore a black Sherwani by the designer as well), and the couple also donned the designer’s creations just this week for a puja hosted by Chopra’s mother.

But just because Chopra will likely wear a traditional color of the event, don’t except the wow-factor to be toned down at all. Expect heavy embroidery and layers of jewelry. She’ll also likely bring her own flair to the occasion with an unexpected lehenga blouse or an extra long train, à la her bestie Meghan Markle’s 16 foot train.

And while Chopra’s longtime stylist Mimi Cutrell has already confirmed she’s responsible for helping perfect Chopra’s American wedding look, all eyes are on Ami Patel (@stylebyami) who seems to already have a hand in styling Chopra and Jonas’s Indian wedding wardrobe.

Bollywood Stars Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh Wed in Lake Como

If you need a little something to hold you over until Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’s pending nuptials, how about a lavish, multi-day affair in Lake Como, Italy, to celebrate the wedding of Bollywood superstars Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh? (Did you ever think something could give Chopra and Jonas’s literal Jodhpur palace venue a run for its money?)

Chopra’s Bollywood comrades married Wednesday in Italy in a stunning white-themed Konkani (South Indian) ceremony in Como’s Villa del Balbianello, according to The Indian Express. Prior to the ceremony the couple held a traditional Mehendi and Sangeet, and, on Thursday, the two will also hold a red-themed Sindhi ceremony. The affair was reportedly incredibly intimate with Indian outlet NDTV reporting that only 45 people made the guest list.

While the couple has gone to great lengths to keep paparazzi and fans at bay, a few images and videos of Padukone and Singh’s nuptials are still making the social media rounds. In the clips, the actress appears to be wearing a golden saree and her new husband is dressed in all white as they hide behind umbrellas and board a boat.

The newly-married pair has been dating for six years and announced their wedding less than a month ago on Instagram. “We thank you for all the love you have showered upon us over the years on this incredible journey of love, loyalty, friendship and togetherness,” the note, posted on October 21, read.

Many fans have also noted that their wedding date holds a special significance: The film the couple met and began dating on, Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela, premiered on November 14, 2013.

It seems Lake Como doesn’t hold any special significance for the couple, but the spectacular region has been home to many celebrity weddings from George and Amal Clooney to Chrissy Teigen and John Legend. Of late, Bollywood stars like Anushka Sharma and cricket player Virat Kohli like have been forgoing wedding events in India, instead flocking to Italy in favor of quieter affairs.

The Lake Como ceremonies will not be the last of Padkoune’s and Singh’s celebrateions. The pair also reportedly plans to hold receptions in Deepika’s hometown, Bangalore, on November 21 and another party for their Bollywood friends in Bombay on November 28.

Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade Announce Baby Via Surrogate

no thumb

The celebrity baby boom of 2018 has no plans of slowing down! On Thursday, Gabrielle Union revealed that she Dwyane Wade were new parents of a baby girl, born via surrogate on Wednesday.

The actress posted two sweet images to Instagram showing a glimpse of their bundle of joy, cradled in their arms atop a hospital bed. She captioned the pictures with the lyrics to the song “Sunshine” writing, “When I wake up in the mornin’ love / And the sunlight hurts my eyes / And there’s something without warning, love / Bears heavy on my mind.” She continued, calling their daughter a “miracle baby.”

“We are sleepless and delirious but so excited to share that our miracle baby arrived last night via surrogate and 11/7 will forever be etched in our hearts as the most loveliest of all the lovely days. Welcome to the party sweet girl! #onelastdance #skintoskin,” Union wrote. Wade shared the same pictures and caption to his social media.

The new parents have yet to share their baby’s name.

Union, 46, has been incredibly open about her journey to have a child with the NBA star, revealing last year in her memoir that she has had “eight or nine miscarriages.”

“For three years, my body has been a prisoner of trying to get pregnant — I’ve either been about to go into an IVF cycle, in the middle of an IVF cycle, or coming out of an IVF cycle,” Union wrote, per People.

Despite the fertility struggles, Union wrote that she and Wade “remain bursting with love and ready to do anything to meet the child we’ve both dreamed of.”

Union and Wade were married in 2014 in a star-studded affair. The couple are currently raising Wade’s nephew as well as two sons from a previous marriage (Wade’s third son lives with his mother).

Earlier this year, the basketball player spoke with Entertainment Tonight about how he and Union’s marriage stays strong despite their busy careers and the ups-and-downs of life. “I think the biggest thing with me and my wife—what we’ve always tried to do in our short period of time, especially being married—is just to stay in constant communication with each other, try to support each other in everything. And it’s tough at times.”

We’re sure a newborn will make things even tougher, but we have a feeling this pair is more than ready for the challenge. Congrats to the happy couple!

Meg Ryan and John Mellencamp Are Engaged!

no thumb

Meg Ryan and John Mellencamp may be joining a long list of celebrity couples who took the engagement plunge in 2018, but they are undoubtedly the funniest pair to do so—if their announcement is any indication.

On Thursday, the beloved actress took to Instagram to share the happy news, posting a silly, personal and, shall we dare say, amateur, drawing of the pair. In the goofy pic, a disheveled Ryan reaches for a balding Mellencamp’s hand, as he holds a guitar in the other hand. (The artist clearly took some artistic liberties, considering Ryan, 56, and Mellencamp, 67, look as good as ever.) Ryan simply captioned the image, “ENGAGED!” letting the picture speak for itself.

Reports of the couple’s engagement began circulating when Ryan stepped out on Wednesday sporting a gold and diamond ring—some publications even took the rings to symbolize a recent secret wedding between the two. But it seems Ryan wanted to quickly shut down those rumors, clarifying her relationship status on social media a day later.

The engagement between the singer and actress is a long time coming; the couple dated for three years before calling it off in 2014 due to “distance,” according to People. They rekindled their romance in the spring of 2017, People adds.

This is Ryan’s second marriage; she was previously married to actor Dennis Quaid for a decade before splitting in 2001 and they share two kids. Mellencamp has had three previous marriages, most recently to Elaine Irwin, before they ended things in 2011. (Mellencamp has five kids from previous relationships.) The singer was then linked to supermodel Christie Brinkley for over a year.

Read an Excerpt From Justin Timberlake's New Book About Meeting and Falling for Jessica Biel

no thumb

Justin Timberlake has long been penning romantic song lyrics, but now he’s trying his hand at book writing—and somehow his sweet words about wife Jessica Biel translate just as sentimentally without music as they do with.

In his upcoming book Hindsight: And All the Things I Can’t See in Front of Me, the singer writes passionately and honestly about how he met Biel, 36, at a surprise party in Los Angeles, immediately fell for her, tormented himself about asking her out, and how their relationship blossomed after.

“When I met Jess, it was undeniable how beautiful she is,” Timberlake, 37, writes in an excerpt published on Monday on Entertainment Weekly. “I made some sort of sarcastic comment, really dry. Nobody got it except her. She laughed, and I noticed, all of a sudden, and in the way where you wonder if a person’s like you, if they have a very dry, dark sense of humor too.”

The singer goes on to explain how they danced that evening (to “Lucky Star”) but he didn’t ask for her number—a fact that haunted him for days as quickly realized he was smitten.

“Thoughts kept leaping into my mind: I’m kind of really interested in that girl,” Timberlake writes. “There was just something about that girl. Kind of interested in that girl. Goddamn it.”

Luckily, a friend later brought Biel to one of Timberlake’s concerts and after a fortuitous bus ride, the singer was able to snag the actress’s digits that led to weeks of phone chats and eventually a full blown relationship.

(In 2012, Timberlake admitted in an interview that he “had to be pretty persistent in order to get her to say yes” to a date. “I have a fair amount of tenacity and if I want something I stick to it. And in the end she agreed.”)

In the excerpt, Timberlake also admits Biel “changed my life.”

“We’ve had a lot of unforgettable times,” he writes. “She’s become a huge influence on my life, and I have such admiration for her, especially seeing her as a mother now. But I had admiration for her before. She’s a very good writer. She’s a poet. She’s a tremendous actor. She’s funny. Very funny. And she’s one of the most patient people I’ve ever met. So, could finding someone who covers for your shortcomings be a thing that plays well for relationships?

He continues, “She changed me. She changed my life. All of that is in Mirrors. Not the details. But the way it felt to have my life be touched by her,” he writes, referencing his 2013 single.

In the book, he also reveals he penned the song when the couple were living together and not engaged, but he was moved to write it because his and Biel’s relationship mirrored his grandparents “long-lasting love.”

“I know that’s what I have with my wife,” Timberlake writes.

The singer and actor met in 2007 and were engaged in 2011 in Montana. They were married in Italy in 2012 (Biel wore a pink dress and walked down the aisle to a Timberlake tune). And in April 2015, they welcomed a son, Silas Randall. Since then, the two have kept fans swooning by posting adorable and supportive Instagrams to each other. Biel even made a music video appearance in early 2018!
