Luxury travel brand Coco Collection has announced an internship as part of its continuing partnership with the Olive Ridley Project – a charity that works to rescue, rehabilitate, and protect sea turtles in the surrounding Baa Atoll.

The competition winner will be flown out to the beautiful Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu resort in the Maldives for two weeks in August, where they will work at The Marine Turtle Rescue Centre. Located in a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the island is no stranger to incredible marine life in the stunning nearby reefs; however, as the first and only veterinarian-led turtle rescue centre in the Maldives, the Olive Ridley Project is seeing an increase in the number of turtles being brought to the centre for rehabilitation through various means.

According to Coco Collection, the intern will have the chance to gain veterinary experience from one of the UK’s leading specialist turtle veterinary surgeons, Dr Claire Petros. Their daily duties will include feeding the turtles, cleaning tanks, observing surgeries and medical procedures, and attending rescue missions to collect turtles in need. They will also be able to interact with guests who visit the centre, giving them information on the turtles staying at the centre and attending any Olive Ridley Project presentation evenings. Duties will also include guest posts on the Olive Ridley Project’s social media platforms, to update on their personal progress and show a behind-the-scenes look of the Rescue Centre.

Coco Collection says the chosen winner will stay in a guest villa and have full board benefits at Coco Palm’s Cowrie restaurant. They will also be gifted some of the experiences available to guests of the resort, such as a Sunset Cruise and a guided group snorkelling trip in Baa Atoll.

Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu’s General Manager, Siraj Waseem, said: “We are looking forward to receiving applications for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for one lucky winner to come and join The Marine Turtle Rescue Centre. Coco Collection is dedicated to their continued efforts to care for the environment and recognise the need for sustainability, and we hope this internship will help to highlight the fantastic work the Olive Ridley Project is achieving on Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu.”

Martin Stelfox, Founder and CEO of the Olive Ridley Project, said: “This internship is a fantastic opportunity to highlight the important work carried out by the Olive Ridley Project. In four years, the partnership with Coco Collection has gone from strength to strength and the dedicated Rescue Centre on Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu has rehabilitated over 40 turtles. Marine conservation is more prevalent than ever before, and we are delighted to be offering a lucky intern a hands-on experience working with such beautiful animals to help sustain their existence.”

Investing in the Future of Marine Conservation
—Six Senses Laamu launches Junior Marine Biology program

no thumb

Everyone can be a marine conservationist. That’s the message Maldives Underwater Initiative (MUI), the marine team at Six Senses Laamu, wants to share with the next generation of marine stewards.

For this summer holiday, MUI is launching the Junior Marine Biology program for budding conservationists aged 6 to 16. The first of its kind in the Maldives, the program pairs one-on-one mentoring from the 10 MUI marine biologists with a “choose your own adventure” structure that allows the junior marine biologists to design their own personalized program.

Marteyne van Well, Six Senses Laamu general manager, says, “This program is truly unique. Unlike anything I’ve seen in the Maldives, it’s more than just a “be a marine biologist for a day’ experience. This is multiple sessions over the length of a guest’s stay that will help foster deeper engagement and understanding of marine biology.

One of the largest marine teams in the Maldives, MUI’s 10 regular marine biologists have expertise in fields such as coral restoration, turtles, manta rays, seagrass and fisheries management. Young conservationists have the opportunity to be involved in ongoing research projects such as expanding the resort’s turtle database of 420 individuals, or joining the coral biologist in restoring the reef with the mid-water rope coral nursery.

As part of their personal project, a Junior Marine Biologist is conducting a turtle survey at Six Senses Laamu house reef.

The only resort in the southern Maldives’ Laamu Atoll, Six Senses Laamu has pristine coral reefs, abundant seagrass beds, and mangrove forests right on its doorstep. Rich in marine life, these environments provide the perfect opportunity to see first-hand the importance of conserving the oceans.

Shelley Turnbull, Junior Marine Biology program coordinator, says the program will tap into the passion of future ocean stewards and encourage them to protect these habitats in Laamu and across the globe.

“We want our Junior Marine Biologists to have the tools they need and be empowered to create change back at home. Every action and every person, no matter how small, can have a positive impact on ocean conservation. We have already seen today’s youth coming up with innovative solutions to the problems past generations have created, such as plastic pollution. Take BioCellection for example; what began as an idea following a field trip to the local waste facility by high school seniors is now an enterprise turning plastics in landfill into chemicals to be used again.

Young guests who are interested in becoming a Junior Marine Biologist can register their interest at the time of their booking and be greeted on arrival by the MUI team, ready to begin their adventure.

Nika Island Writes (And Spreads) Maldivian History

no thumb

Patronage is the support, encouragement, privilege, or aid that an organisation or individual bestows to another. In the history of art, “patronage” refers to the support that has been provided to artists such as musicians, painters, and sculptors.

Most languages other than English still use the term mecenate, derived from the name of Gaius Mecenate,  generous friend and adviser to the Roman Emperor Augustus.

During the Renaissance, not only in Italy but also in Europe, the concept of Patronage and “Mecenatismo” allowed arts to flourish, as several groups of Patrons sponsored art and architecture, painting, sculpture and handicrafts.

Can a Maldivian Resort turn into a “Mecenate”, in to a Patron? Can a Hotel preserve, protect and revamp the folklore and heritage that are spread in a Nation made of thousands of islands?

Edoardo Caccin, supported Nika Island to turn this question into a challenge, that is is now reality.

Nika Museum is the result of the transformation of an old Furnace that was used in the island to cast and forge metals. In the conversion of the old Furnace into a Museum two dimensions coexist: the concept of conservation ( that is part of Nika’s DNA ) and the creation of a new space that constantly interact with each others.
A maze of tunnels and galleries, coral made vaults and arches lead the visitors through an unexpected space and a unique collection made of artefacts, pieces of arts and creations of local artists. A selection of items and objects that allows the Team of Nika to share with the community of travellers a fascinating story and to make the local community (re)discover the heritage of a country that is slowly fading away.
Edoardo Caccin points out that “The new museum is a space that reflects the beauty of a Nation; it tells what the Nation has been – and hopefully –  it can even foreshadow future developments of the Maldives”.

Nika Island is a piece of Maldivian history, one of the first islands in Ari Atoll to become a unique destination in the world. Nika Island is the heavenly island of our collective imagination. A platform where the typical concepts of Maldivian tradition and beauty blend with Italian culture. Nika is the island where nothing has changed. This island is suspended in time, immune to the dynamics of massive tourism that are redefining the Maldives today. An ambitious alchemical experiment, unrepeatable and totally successful, that has written an important chapter in the history of tourism in the Maldives.

During the celebration held at Nika for the opening of the Museum, the Italian Consul Giorgia Marazzi stressed that “ (…) The decision of creating a Museum at Nika perfectly matches with the profile of the Island: Nika represented the “embryo” of the dialogue – first of all a cultural dialogue – between Italy and the Maldives”.
The team of this Island wants to celebrate, elevate and spread the unique components of the Maldivian culture among the travellers. How? Simply using the mechanisms and dynamics that belong to all the museums in the world: selected items, handcrafts, artefacts and pieces of art – combined with storytelling – will guide the visitors through the folklore and heritage of the Country.
According to Caccin, “the Museum aims to generate awareness among the travellers, to make them understand that the destination they are experiencing cannot be reduced to a serie of breathtaking beaches”.

Over the years, Nika Island has been building tight relations with the representatives of both Private and Public Sectors, with NGOs, Artists and International Organisations that share their experiences and their stories.

At Nika, the representatives of United Nations Development program explain what are the main challenges that Maldivians face in their daily life. TMA ( that runs the largest fleet of seaplane in the world ) describes how the concept of connectivity is evolving along with the development of the hospitality industry.

Local artists, poets and dancers share their art and their vision of the country. Nika supports Parley to intercept the plastic that is suffocating the ocean.

In addition to Nika’s private collection, the Museum is hosting the exhibition “ The Island Nation” by Zuleyha Ali. Zuleyha is a talented Maldivian artist, who made history in the Maldives for being the first Maldivian artist to be selected to participate at the prestigious Florence Biennale 2017 held in Italy.

Zuleyha Ali’s work has been displayed in international exhibitions. Including Paris, New York, Florence, Chianciono Terme, Singapore, Beijing, Dhaka, Colombo, and Male’. Five of her paintings have entered the permanent collection of the Chinese Ministry of Art and Culture in Beijing, China. Two of her paintings have entered Beijing Yi Pu Culture, Permanent collection in Singapore.

The paintings in the collection that is hosted at Nika Museum illustrate an array of natural scenes that Maldives has to offer. The collection focuses on the alarming threats the country is facing because of environmental concerns such as Climate change and Global warming.

Zuleyha Ali highlights “I aim to portray my art works as an engaging visual representation that I hope will grab the attention of viewers. I like to focus on and highlight their role in preserving nature.I also find it very important to draw the attention of young minds and adults alike to environmental issues and nature in a positive way, in order to foster constructive and optimistic changes towards a more sustainable world”.

It’s clear that with its new Museum Nika Island not only is is still writing History, it is also sharing it with all the travellers that are eager to discover, understand and appreciate all the dynamics that make this Island – and the Maldives – an iconic and unique destination in the world.
