Conrad Maldives Rangali Island’s New Eco Initiatives

Conrad Maldives Rangali Island, the pioneering resort nestled in the South Ari Atoll embarks on an eco-journey though working with leading environmental organization and collaboration network, Parley For The Oceans and ephemeral artist, John K. Melvin to ignite appreciation for the  oceans and surrounding environment. To celebrate the progressive movement towards fostering sustainable hospitality, the resort unveiled a large-scale installation by acclaimed artist John K. Melvin. Encouraging participation from both the Maldives community and global travelers alike, the resort continues to further its commitment to preserving the beauty of the Maldives, for generations to come.

Starting late summer 2019, Conrad Maldives Rangali Island will work with Parley For The Oceans to take an active role in becoming part of the solution to the challenges that face the world’s oceans. Following the principles of the Parley AIR Hospitality Program (Avoid, Intercept, Redesign), the resort will help to drive change by offering its guests a Parley Kit, available in every guest villa. Each Parley Kit contains a reusable stainless steel 0.7L Conrad x Parley co-branded water bottle and a Parley Ocean Plastic® Tote Bag. The tote bag is made of an average of 5 intercepted plastic bottles and its purchase contributes to the removal of 10 pounds of marine plastic waste via the Parley Global Clean Up Network. This way, Conrad guests are encouraged to play an active role in reducing the use of harmful materials.

“With a mindful approach to travel, Conrad Maldives Rangali Island continues to inspire change,” said Stefano Ruzza, General Manager of Conrad Maldives Rangali Island. “Through creative collaborations with likeminded brands and the development of unique and educational experiences on and off property, we encourage our guests to become part of the solution as they reinforce a positive impact while traveling as well as in their daily life at home.”

Building on their mission to inspire guests’ connection to the Maldives, Conrad Maldives Rangali Island is using art as a catalyst for conversation and creativity to incentivise change and address the need for implementing sustainable practices. The resort commissioned renowned ephemeral eco- artist John K. Melvin to construct an installation that speaks to the human relationship with the environment and more specifically, the topic of plastic pollution. EvoGyre debuted at Rangali Bar on June 23, 2019 and is assembled using nearly 5,500 locally sourced single-use plastic bottles held together by coir rope, steel cable and illuminated by LED lighting.

The life-size structure, measuring five metres x five metres x seven metres, hangs from the ceiling and serves as an educational and interactive touchpoint for guests who find themselves enamoured by the piece. Resembling a jellyfish, a species known for being an indicator of climate change, EvoGyre makes a direct connection between the surrounding marine environment of the Maldives and the impact of plastic. Inspired by THE MURAKA and the surrounding Maldivian community, EvoGyre serves as a visual reminder of the humankind responsibility to protect the oceans.

Committed to the Parley AIR strategy to end plastic pollution, the resort has also pledged to eliminate the use of plastic on property. By January 2020, Conrad Maldives Rangali Island will officially replace all single-use plastic bottles with either glass or a reusable material. This investment in the future of the environment is complemented by the resort’s new guest programming, which includes eco-activities ranging from beach clean ups on neighbouring islands to a coral reef regeneration initiative with the resort’s own marine biologists.

Conrad Maldives Rangali Island is aligned with Hilton’s global corporate responsibility strategy “Travel with Purpose,” which is dedicated to developing shared value for communities where the hotels and resorts are located. Conrad Maldives supports Hilton’s commitment and Travel with Purpose strategy to cut its environmental footprint in half and double its social impact investment by 2030, a strategy that supports the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. Through a robust corporate responsibility program that encompasses sustainability and community investment initiatives, Conrad Maldives strives to make an enduring and positive impact on the lives of the people living in these communities.

In a press event held Thursday (29 August 2019) the Managing Director of MMPRC Thoyyib Mohamed said the corporation believes it is time to diversify Maldives tourism to more niche markets.

“We have seen temporary efforts in marketing Maldives to several niche markets in the past; without a significant result. Therefore I believe we need a good understanding of niche marketing and even better plans to achieve results. Now we are in the process of creating a marketing plan to reach several niche markets in a sustainable manner. They include MICE, Cultural and Sports Tourism. We are working with a consultant to formulate these strategies for the year 2020.” He said, continuing to give statistics on tourism growth this year and MMPRC’s marketing activities.

By the end of August 2019, MMPR has marketed the products of Maldives tourism at 15 fairs in 12 markets and 5 roadshows in 13 markets.  Furthermore, 12 joint promotion programs, 2 global campaigns and several foreign media fam trips have been conducted with great success. In addition to these activities, 11 Public Relations firms are constantly promoting Maldives to their respective markets.

Mr. Thoyyib Mohamed said that MMPRC attributes this growth to the efforts of tourism industry properties, political stability and the cooperative marketing efforts. He concluded the press conference answering questions from the media regarding several functions of MMPRC. One of the questions posed by the press was MMPRC’s role in marketing the affordable products of tourism. Mr. Thoyyib Mohamed responded by saying that it is one of the focus areas MMPRC has worked on since the inauguration of the new government.

“It is in government’s best interest to promote the Local Island Tourism and that’s precisely what we have done. We have conducted fruitful marketing seminars for the local island tourism businesses. We have reduced the participation cost for the smaller businesses and even waived off some fees to encourage their participation.”  He said while announcing the upcoming Tourism Marketeers Evening which gathers industry professionals for exchange of ideas for marketing activities for 2020.

World´s Largest Floating Solar Power System at Sea Launched In Lux* South Ari Atoll, Maldives

A technological breakthrough changes the perspective on renewable energy – the world´s largest solar power system floating at sea has been installed at LUX* South Ari Atoll. This unique technology called SolarSea gathers solar energy directly on the ocean to power the island in an eco-friendly fashion.

As part of the resort’s commitment to sustainability, LUX* South Ari Atoll has pledged to minimize carbon dioxide emissions. To achieve this goal, the five-star luxury resort partnered with the leading solar provider Swimsol, an Austrian-Maldivian company, which provided a solution to overcome the limited space available for solar panels on small tropical islands.

Consequently, Swimsol developed the first and only patented floating solar power system that is designed to withstand the harsh conditions of the waves, storms and saltwater.

“Innovation is key to achieving true sustainability, and we are happy to partner with Swimsol to work towards our goal of minimizing our ecological footprint. As one of the biggest resort islands in the Maldives, we aim to lead the way with eco-tourism and marine conservation work in our region as part of our commitment to good governance, social responsibility and respect for environmental standards”, said Jonas Amstad, General Manager at LUX* South Ari Atoll.

The resort is already using a rooftop system with the same solar company. Once all suitable roofs were covered with solar panels, the resort decided to expand beyond the shoreline with twelve SolarSea platforms. Thereby the solar capacity increased by 40% and reached 678 kWp, enough to power all guest villas with solar energy during the peak sun hours. The result is cheaper energy and a saving of more than 260,000 litres of diesel per year that previously were needed to produce the same amount of electricity with combustion engines.

Additionally, guests can follow a live “solar tracker” on their in-villas IPTV that will indicate the energy produced, diesel saved as well as the equivalent of carbon dioxide emissions savings to offset the number of long-haul flights.

The ocean benefits as well – the platforms provide shelter for juvenile fish and invertebrates, acting like fish-aggregating devices. To avoid any negative effects, the platforms float above the sandy seabed, avoiding the coral reefs. Free-swimming coral larvae can even use the platforms to grow into adult colonies, which can then be replanted on the ocean floor.

Today, the combined rooftop and SolarSea system at LUX* South Ari Atoll is one of the largest solar installations in the country. Plans to further increase the solar capacity are already underway.

Hussain Simad, Managing Director at Swimsol Maldives, has big plans. He said, “Swimsol is the only company with this patented technology in the world right now and our goal is to enable every island to run purely on solar energy. It is a fantastic opportunity to work with LUX* South Ari Atoll to achieve this with their immense support and passionate enthusiasm in making a difference.”

Following in the steps of its parent company, The Lux Collective, of which the purpose is to make each moment matter and to care about what matters, LUX* South Ari Atoll is committed to contributing in any way, big or small, to make eco-tourism a success in the Maldives.
