Celebrate tying the knot in one of the most beautiful beach destinations on the earth

White sandy beaches, crystal clear lagoons and dazzling astronomical displays: it’s not difficult to see why the seductive islands of the Maldives are a popular honeymoon destination for newlyweds.

After the emotional rollercoaster involved in planning a wedding, the sunny Maldives is a peaceful getaway for couples to unwind and enjoy time away from London life in the idyllic and peaceful waters of the Indian Ocean.

Looking for the low-down on where to stay? We’ve rounded up six of the most luxurious resorts to make any honeymoon unforgettable.

Per Aquum Huvafen Fushi

Butlers bringing you brunch while you paddle, private sands and an underwater spa experience: boutique hotels don’t come much more blissful than Per Aquum Huvafen Fushi. Honeymooners can book a large and luxurious deluxe beach bungalow which opens out onto white sands and beach views, or get away from it all in the lagoon-like infinity edge pool which bleeds into the watery horizon of the Indian Ocean. Push the boat out – literally, and add a private charter to your booking – a 680-foot motor cruiser with an onboard wine cellar.

Conrad Maldives Rangali

Couples will be whisked away by seaplane to this paradise island resort, where you can enjoy unique experiences such as swimming with whale sharks, before soaking up the sun, cocktail in hand, and falling back onto fluffy white pillows in a romantic wooden villa. Setting it apart from its competitors, this idyllic escape has an unusual setting for wining and dining – the world’s first and only all-glass undersea restaurant. Ithaa sits five metres below the sea’s surface, offering 180-degree panoramic views of the vibrant coral gardens and natural wildlife surrounding it.

Ayada

Sitting on the southern rim of the Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll and just 30km north  of the Equator, Ayada is  big enough for adventurous couples to get lost on, perfect for walking, cycling and exploring the stunning natural beauty of the Maldives. Middle Eastern inspired villas provide a cosy and quiet retreat for a romantic getaway, while there’s plenty of places for active couples to unwind – from turkish baths to beach-side beds.

Six Senses Laamu

The only resort in the Laamu Atoll, this secluded nirvana will bring you to a place where dolphins swim. The resort is a combination of on-land and over-water villas constructed of sustainable materials, leading to the palm-filed shore. Even the fussiest of eaters will feel at home here – there are several restaurants to choose from, where Laamu’s chefs from East and West prepare delicious dishes from produce grown in the island’s organic gardens.

Naladhu

Naladhu is a tropical island resort sharing a clear lagoon with its sister resorts Dhigu and Veli. Maldivian for “beautiful island,” Naladhu offers swaying palms and endless turquoise waters. The resort is notoriously difficult to visit, as there are only 20 expansive villas and houses – so make sure to book well in advance. Each cosy bolthole has a magnificent private pool fronting the azure Indian Ocean and a romantic elegance that will set the mood for newlyweds.

Travel brand Kuoni has revealed its latest report showing the Maldives scores as the top location for honeymoon couples, but also that adventure holidays are growing in popularity over stay-put beach breaks

Couples see the Maldives as the ultimate luxury island paradise, with the holiday destination scoring the top spot for honeymooners, Kuoni’s worldwide trends report shows.

With its unique collection of all-island resorts and over-water villas, the Maldives continues to set the pace in luxury travel and scores higher than any other destination on customer satisfaction.

The worldwide holiday company has seen holidays with an adventure, cultural or touring element as part of the itinerary grow at twice the pace of stay-put beach breaks over the past two years, and the report has also unveiled the top locations for honeymoons in 2016.

Same-sex honeymoons are also on the rise, according to Kuoni. Over 15,000 same-sex marriages have taken place since it was introduced in England and Wales in 2014, according to the Office for National Statistics. The increase has resulted in demand for luxury travel advice from companies able to guide couples on the legal and cultural positions in different destinations.

When it comes to creating big life moments, from seeing wildlife in its natural habitat to experiencing iconic sights such as the Great Wall of China, more than *60 per cent of British adults are prepared to invest more than the average holiday in making their wish list a reality.

Other key findings about honeymoons include:

Snorkelling with turtles in turquoise-blue waters remains one of the top wish list experiences for honeymoon couples this year.
Honeymooners are now spending an average of £5,902 in total on their trip, up from £5,743 last year, backing up a trend for more adventure, upgraded luxury and once-in-a-lifetime experiences.
The most popular month to book a Kuoni honeymoon is January.
The average honeymoon duration is 13 days.
11.6 per cent of Kuoni honeymoon bookers put their honeymoon on a John Lewis gift list in 2015.
Indonesia has seen the biggest rise in the top 10 and Bali is a favourite as it’s a perfect destination to visit weather-wise during the wedding-boom months.
Vietnam has jumped five places in the past year to the number 11 spot, showing the popularity of adventure touring over a classic beach stay.
